Winning Run for Byerley and Southern Cross

July 19 – The Southern Cross brand has been a regular feature in the winner’s list in recent weeks with a string of smart winners sold under their well recognized banner.

Talented Choisir mare Miss Independent bounced back to her best form with a resounding two and a half length win in the Benchmark 80 fillies and mares event at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Chris Waller trained mare failed to fire at her most recent run in Listed company in Brisbane, but she certainly made amends on her return home.

She raced just off the pace for in-form apprentice Blake Spriggs before dashing clear to win as she pleased from smart Redoute’s Choice filly Dystopia, who is also trained by Waller.

Miss Independent (pictured in the red Triple Crown colours) took her overall record to three wins and 12 placings from 26 starts with prizemoney of $483,705, her career highlight to date a memorable win in the rich $350,000 Inglis Classic as a two year-old.

Miss Independent was purchased by Triple Crown for $65,000from the Southern Cross Breeders draft at the 2007 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Prepared at Byerley Stud on behalf of Armidale based breeder Alan Chappell, Miss Independent is a full sister to stakes-placed Malambo.

Miss Independent and Malambo are from the Gooree Stud bred Last Tycoon (IRE) mare Bomba, who was secured for Mr Chappell by Byerley Stud at the 2002 Inglis June Sale in Melbourne for $20,000.

The win of Miss Independent follows hot on the heels of a runaway victory for Johannesburg (USA) five year-old Yoburg, who bolted in the previous Saturday at Randwick scoring by four and a half lengths.

A $40,000 purchase for Vin Cox Bloodstock from the Southern Cross draft at the 2006 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Yoburg is prepared by Gary Portelli and has won six of 21 starts earning $165,600 in prizemoney providing a great result for his owners.

Another Southern Cross graduate making his mark has been the Paul Nolan trained My Mayfair, who snared Black Type recently when running a bold third in the Listed QTC Queensland Cup over the marathon 3200 metres.

By Choisir from Life’s a Rainbow, My Mayfair was a $40,000 purchase for his trainer from the Southern Cross draft at the 2007 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and has won six races and more than $75,000 in prizemoney.

Other recent winners sold by Southern Cross include Benicio two year-old Larry’s Ready, who won by more than five lengths for Neil Goldbolt at Port Macquarie on July 3 and four year-old Fasliyev (USA) gelding Manganese, who won his  sixth race at Morphettville last Saturday for Kevin Sweeney taking his prizemoney tally in excess of $83,000.

Byerley Stud and Southern Cross Breeders will be presenting quality drafts of yearlings at all the major sales in 2011.
